Presentation Descriptions:

Education Planning & Saving - Attendees will walk away with a solid understanding of how financial aid and the expected family contribution are calculated. We’ll dispel the myth that saving for college will hurt a child’s chance for financial aid and provide a deep dive into 529 college savings plans, the unique 5-year gift averaging feature and provide distribution strategies for non-parental owned 529s.

Financial Literacy & Decisions of Young Adults - In recent years, student loan debt has climbed to become the second highest category of consumer debt behind mortgage debt. Evidence suggests that the rising cost of obtaining a degree is not deterring students from attending college, rather, current students are borrowing more to attend than previous cohorts. Previous studies have noted decreased economic stability associated with student loan debt, and there is evidence that high levels of student loan debt might have an impact on degree attainment, school program and career choices, and later borrowing decisions. The presentation considers the role of financial literacy and consumer understanding of borrowing decisions using data from a nationally representative sample of U. S. adults. Most importantly, the presentation explores how student loan debt impacts later life decisions and outcomes for those carrying student loan debt. The discussion highlights the critical role of proper planning given the potential for significant adverse outcomes in the consumer loan marketplace.

Managing Student Loans in a Changing Landscape - Attorney Adam S. Minsky is a student loan expert who has built a successful legal practice focused entirely on helping student loan borrowers and their families. He will provide a detailed overview of the complex student loan system and programs that may be available to borrowers to better manage their student debt, so that practitioners will be better prepared to help clients who are struggling with student debt. Topics will include:
     - Student loan types
     - Student loan players
     - Student loan statuses
     - Repayment plans, including income-driven plans
     - Loan forgiveness programs
     - The pros and cons of consolidation and refinancing
     - Legislative changes
